Are Prices Procyclical ? : A Disaggregate Level Analysis

نویسنده

چکیده

This paper is an empirical investigation of the comovement of prices and output in the postwar period at the disaggregate level. The correlation between these two macro variables is measured using VAR forecast errors. This measure does not require any a priori assumptions about the order of integration. The results reject the notion of procyclical prices in the long run. These results are in conformity with the findings of Den Haan (2000) at the aggregate level. The most plausible explanation for such behavior appears to be the presence of supply shocks in the long run. * The author would like to thank Dr. Randall Parker for his insightful comments and fruitful discussions at every stage of completion of this paper.

Are Prices Countercyclical? Evidence From East Asian Countries

The cyclicality of prices has been in debate recently. One of the key stylized facts that has served as a cornerstone for traditional business cycle models is the procyclical behavior of prices. Recent research has questioned the empirical basis for this stylized fact. Using quarterly U.S. data, Kydland and Prescott (1990) report that cyclical components of U.S. prices and output are correlated...

The Co-movement between Output and Prices: Evidence from Iran

This paper employs a multivariate dynamic conditional correlation GARCH model, which is developed by Engle (2001, 2002), to detect the timing and nature of changes in the comovement between Iranian output and prices for the periods after Iran–Iraq war , known as imposed war . The results showed that there is a weak correlation between output and prices after imposed war and  varies periodically...

Changes in the effects of monetary policy on disaggregate price dynamics

Based on a time-varying factor-augmented vector autoregression, we demonstrate that the propagation mechanism of monetary policy disturbances differs across disaggregate components of personal consumption expenditures. While many disaggregate prices rise temporarily in response to a monetary tightening in the early part of the sample, there is no evidence of a price puzzle at the aggregate leve...

Nominal Stylized Facts of U.S. Business Cycles

movements of money and prices, appear to be business cycle myths. In contrast to conventional wisdom, they argue that the price level (whether measured by the implicit GNP deflator or by the consumer price index), is countercyclical. Although the monetary base and M1 are both procyclical, neither leads the cycle. This evidence counters Mankiw’s (1989) criticism of real business cycle models on ...

The Cyclical Behavior of Prices and Employee Compensation

Are prices procyclical? For many economists, they clearly are. As Lucas (1976, 104) put it, “The fact that nominal prices and wages tend to rise more rapidly at the peak of the business cycle than they do in the trough has been well recognized from the time when the cycle was first perceived as a distinct phenomenon.” More recently, however, other researchers have challenged the prevailing view...
